Sharp VZ-2000 Guide: Vertical Record Player and Both Sides Play

Vintage Audio Knowledge Base · Model resource

The Sharp VZ-2000 turns the record player toward the room. Its service documentation describes a vertical player, fully automatic control by a microcomputer and a linear-tracking mechanism. The record remains visible while the system handles a controlled sequence of loading, cueing, playing, return and—when selected—moving on to the other side.

What “Both Sides Play” means

The VZ-2000 / VZ-2000X / VZ-2000XA service manual documents a dedicated Both Sides Play key. With that mode selected, side A or B is followed automatically by the other side. The same control group includes side A/side B selection, 33/45 speed, cue, cartridge forward/reverse and repeat. These controls instruct the player’s controller and linear tracker to follow a particular sequence.

A record turning on one side proves only part of the system. The feature that makes this model distinctive is the complete side-to-side routine. A real unit should be demonstrated through the exact sequence that the buyer intends to use.

Watch the mechanism as a sequence

  1. Close the player door and confirm that the system recognizes it.
  2. Load the record and select the correct 33 or 45 speed.
  3. Use cue to confirm controlled tonearm movement and stable playback.
  4. Use the side selector only when the owner understands the action it triggers.
  5. If Both Sides Play matters to the purchase, show the actual A-to-B or B-to-A change and return—not merely the start of one side.

Global Opt video

The public video below names Sharp VZ 2000 alongside Sharp 777. It is a model reference from Global Opt, not a promise about the condition of another unit. The accessible page has no transcript, so the text does not infer unshown operations.

Condition evidence matters more than an attractive front panel

A VZ-2000 is a system of linked mechanical and electronic parts. The service manual describes a player-door close sensor and tonearm rest-position logic; a single point in that chain can affect automatic behaviour. Separate display condition from use condition. Photograph the door, controls, indicators, cartridge area, speaker grilles, handle, aerial and rear label. Then document the full sequence that you will rely on.

Confirm the exact suffix and power label on the offered unit. Do not infer voltage compatibility from appearance, and do not use a plug-shape adapter as a voltage converter. If a seller says “serviced”, request the work performed and any remaining limitations. A function that cannot be shown remains unverified.
